Hi my name is Jodie, and I'm the owner of Pamper Me, a beauty salon in Stockport town centre, and also the owner of Little Beauty Shop, an online shop which specialises in offering salon quality products that are usually only available from Beauty Salons. Each week I try to cover a topic that comes up in the salon, and give me free expert advice on what you can do at home to look after your skin.
At the salon so many of our clients have got into a fabulous routine of cleansing, toning and moisturising twice a day - and their results are brilliant!
We are always looking at ways to get the maximum results from our clients' routines at home, and one of the easiest ways to get healthy looking skin is to exfoliate regularly!
There is a lot of choice when it comes to exfoliating, so here is my advise on how to choose the right exfoliating products.
What is Exfoliation?
Exfoliation is the process of removing dry & dead skin cells sitting on the skin's surface, and in some cases the top layer of older skin cells, to reveal a fresher & smoother skin surface.
There are several types of exfoliation:
Why is Exfoliation Important?
Our skin is continually renewing itself, and as we get older this renewal process slows down. This means it takes longer for our skin cells to shed, and longer for our skin to produce new skin, collagen and elastin cells.
Old skin cells start to build up on the surface of the skin creating a barrier that can clog up your pores, resulting in a dull, rough and dry appearance. Which in turn can lead to breakouts and acne.
Exfoliation is a great way of speeding up the cell renewal process, meaning that your skin is producing fresh, healthy skin cells at an accelerated rate.
By removing this barrier of dead skin cells you are unclogging the skin, meaning that your facial products can penetrate more deeply into the skin, which makes them even more effective!
Also when we exfoliate your skin has no choice but to produce more skin cells, and as an added benefit your skin will produce more collagen and elastin cells! - Making your skin look not only radiant, but YOUNGER!!!!
I suggest exfoliating 1-2 times a week if you have oily / balanced skin, and twice a week if you have dry skin.
If you have very sensitive skin or suffer from Rosacea it is advisable not to over stimulate the skin, so I would suggest to use a gentle chemical exfoliation, no more than once a week.
It is important that you don't over do it with your exfoliation scrub, as you can irritate the skin and end up over stimulating the oil production on your skin, resulting in breakouts!
What type of Exfoliation will work best for you?
Oily / Acne Skin
It is important for people with blemished skin to exfoliate at least once a week.
I would suggest to start by giving your skin a deep cleanse using either Eve Taylor Purifying Wash or Eve Taylor Anti Bac Skin Wash to prevent spreading any infections.
For this skin type it is best to use a Chemical Exfoliator, this will prevent irritation and wont spread the bacterial infection.
Apply a thin layer of Eve Taylor Age Resist Active Complex over the whole face and neck, leave on for 3 -10 minutes before thoroughly rinsing off with clean tepid water.
This product will gently dissolve the dead skin cells, and break down the sebum (natural oils) which will help clear up your breakouts.
Make sure you finish off by spritzing Purifying Toner and then apply your favourite moisturiser.
After your cleansing routine apply a small amount of Eve Taylor Exfoliating Scrub over your face and neck. Moisten your finger tips and gently work the scrub, in circular motions, over your face. Pay particular attention to areas that have blackheads i.e. the nose and chin areas, as this scrub will draw out the excess oils.
Rinse off with clean, tepid water, before spritzing with Balancing Toner and apply your favourite Moisturiser.
Sensitive / Rosacea Skin
I always recommend that my clients with this skin type are very careful when exfoliating, and limit exfoliation to once a week.
Eve Taylor Age Resist Active Complex is a creamy textured 'mask like' exfoliant to gently reefing skin texture without friction or scrubbing. It will leave your skin feeling silky smooth and hydrated.
I would suggest that if you have very sensitive skin to leave your masque for no longer than 3 minutes for your first application. If your skin starts to redden remove immediately, taking extra care to ensure you have removed all of the masque. Over time you will notice that you can leave the Active Complex on for longer as your skin becomes more tolerant.
Dry / Mature / Pigmented Skin
Most of my clients use the Eve Taylor Exfoliating Scrubonce a week, because the smooth bamboo beads gently buff and polish the skin leaving a healthy glow.
And for their second exfoliation of the week the use the Eve Taylor Age Resist Active Complex, because it removes dill surface skin build up helping minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
This is also great for lifting the colour of skin where pigmentation has occurred leaving a brighter more radiant appearance.
Afterwards I would suggest you apply your favourite Serum or Face Treatment Oil for deeper absorption!
After you have Exfoliated!
Avoid exposing your skin to UV Rays, I absolutely love Eve Taylor Moisturising Solar Shield SPF 25, which can be used every day to protect your skin.
If you want to have a little 'me' time, apply your favourite Serum and Masque after you have exfoliated, lie back and RELAX!
